بافت تاريخي شهرها داراي مشخصه هايي است كه آن را از بافت هاي پيراموني و ساير قسمت هاي شهر متمايز مي كند. استقرار عناصر، گره هاي ارزشنمد تاريخي، فرهنگي، سياسي و تجاري به همراه تقاوت قدمت بناها، ظرفيت گردشگري و نقش آنها در تقويت هويت فرهنگي و تاريخي، ضرورت نگاه متمايز به اين مناطق را نسبت به ساير مناطق شهري ايجاب مي كند. اهميت و ضرورت حفظ آثار كهن نه به عنوان پديده هاي نمادين، بلكه به دليل شناخت سير تحول و تكامل تاريخ شهرسازي و تمدن شهرنشيني، حفظ هويت و اصالت شهري و تبيين حيات شهري بر اساس شواهد و مدارك علمي همواره مورد توجه بوده است. مياديــن شــهري به عنــوان مهمتريــن ميــدان هــر شــهر محســوب مي شــده كــه عــلاوه بــر تمركــز فعاليتهــاي تجــاري، حكومتــي و مذهبــي، محــل وقــوع مهمتريــن تجمعــات شــهري و رويدادهــاي اجتماعــي نيــز بوده و نقش اجتماعي و ايجاد تعامل ميان شهروندان اهميت اين فضاها را دو چندان مي كند.اين پژوهش از نوع كاربردي _ توسعه اي است كه روش انجام آن توصيفي _ تحليلي مي باشد. در اين مطالعه با مشاهده مكرر محلّه مورد نظر، تصويربرداري، تهيه نقش ههاي مورد نياز و. . . اطلاعات لازم جمع آوري و در نهايت براي تكميل اطلاعات و جويا شدن از مشكلات ساكنان محلّه، پرسشنامه اي تهيه شدبراي ارائه راهبردهاي پايداري كالبدي _ اجتماعي و جذب گردشگران به ميدان توپخانه تهران از تكنيك « SWOT » استفاده شده است. در اين روش تلاشهايي براي تجزيه وتحليل شرايط بيروني و وضعيت دروني صورت مي پذيرد براساس نتايج به دست آمده، راهبردهاي مناسب براي پايداري هرچه بيشتر مطرح مي شوند. به منظور بررسي وضعيت محله به لحاظ مسائل اجتماعي، فرهنگي و كالبدي از پرسشگري در ميان جامعه آماري كمك گرفته شد. جامعه آماري اين تحقيق شامل ساكنان ميدان توپخانه مي باشد. روش نمونه گيري به صورت نمونه گيري تصادفي است
