Cartography of Risks and Mitigation Techniques in Supply Chain

Supply chains are exposed to a wide variety of threats that are growing in importance as globalisation spreads.Companies are facing many added dangers today due to their double presence in both the global and the domesticmarket. During this time, the field of Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) has been consequently developed.Concomitantly, companies have been building knowledge on Risk Management, but different studies haveconsistently reported how none of them address supply chain risks in this newborn area yet. This paper covers theserisks exhaustively by classifying them in business categories and explaining its mitigation techniques, as up to nowresearch has either focused on one category only, or limited to the most common ones when giving a generaloverview. The paper also stresses the increasing importance and impact of disruptions, citing recent examples and casestudies. Two holistic SCRM approaches are also shown. The practical advice comprises risk mitigation strategies(preventive nature) but also dynamic responses once a negative outcome is produced (curative). All this for a twofoldpurpose: to convince firms to start considering Supply Chain an area being worth the effort to risk-assess, and to act asa first touch-point to undertake this paradigm shift
