A Review of Effectiveness of Breast Cancer Screening as a Condition Based Maintenance Strategy

Condition Monitoring (CM), is a recognized strategic tool for assessing the operational state of industrial equipment. It is a modelwhich extends the age-based model with addition of analysis of CM information. In this research, we consider Condition BasedMaintenance (CBM) from different points of views. As human is a system, we can implement maintenance policies on it. Sincebreast cancer is one of the most prevalent and fatal cancers among the world’s women, it is necessary to plan a process forpreventing and reducing the progression of this disease. Cancer screening is similar to the inspection of industrial machinery. Asinspection policies in CBM can prevent failures and increase reliability of systems, screening for breast cancer at early stage canreduce mortality rates and treatment costs. In this study, the most cited and recent papers are reviewed to find barriers and benefitsof breast cancer screening. Then, barriers and benefits of mammography as the best method of screening is analyzed. Previousstudies indicate that the cost problem is one of the major barriers, but results of previous studies show cost effectiveness ofscreening. So we have concluded that the most important gap is lack of knowledge about breast cancer screening. In this researchwe have tried to improve this lack of information and give some suggestions for future to prevent progress of breast cancer andreduce treatment costs.
