On 5 July 2013, a moraine-dammed glacial lake in the Nyainqentanglha Range of southeastern Tibet, burst above Zhongyu village. For the region close to the origin of the outbreak the consequences were catastrophic. The destruction of the only bridge to the county town, 49 houses, and many hectares of valuable arable land, as well as some missing people and livestock, about a 270 million yuan loss, resulted from 13 million m3 of water plummetting down the Niduzangbu valleys. The breaching of the moraine was triggered by wave action following a glacier slide into the lake, which was induced by a rapid melting of the glacier tongue. The surge had formed a breach with a 42m height, and million m3 of debris were moved to the downstream valley by the collapsed flood, forming two debris dams in a respective distance of 2.5 km and 6 km. The potential hazard of glacial lakes persists and increases in Tibet. A hazard assessment including an identification of source areas and subsequent monitoring of glacial lakes is proposed.
