Considering Sustainable Development on Landscape Renewal: the Case of the Hudson River Park

Landscape renewal is one of the major challenges faced by a large number of cities all over the world. It’s impacts on different aspects are widely recognized. To cope with this issue, sustainable development is a commonly accepted growth strategy. In this context, development aims not only at increasing the sustainability purposes, but also in the quality of life. Therefore, sustainable landscape renewal is necessary to integrate economic, environmental and social aspects. In order to develop realistic viewpoint, renewal of Hudson River Park is considered as impressive case study for this subject. This is a great example of patience and persistence in creating a magnificent public space. The purpose of this study is to assess how the Hudson River project could deal with the sustainable development. The main objectives of the context include measurement of the respective sustainability of the, economic, social and environmental aspect. The method consists of three parts: (I) explain the main goals followed by sustainable development; (ii) describe the specific plan and programming of the Hudson River development related to the subject; (iii) assess the project to what extent could meet the sustainable development’s indicators for being compatible. The results of the evaluation revealed that Hudson River Park has generated significant returns on investment for the city and state. In addition, development preserved precious habitat of “estuarine sanctuary”. This estuary system provides significant coastal fish and wildlife Habitat and offers extensive recreational and educational opportunities for Park visitors. As one of the largest and most-frequented waterfront destinations in Manhattan, it continues to offer a unique opportunity for the region to reimagine public waterfronts and people’s relationship with the water. It is expected that findings of this study can draw attention of policy makers and Landscape designers in terms of environmental conservation, sustainable renewal and livelihood development.
