Urban Design with an Emphasis on the Principles of Place Making; (Case Study: 3 Baharestan Neighborhood of Tehran)

Place Making is a bottom-up approach in urban design which its purpose is the creating attractive places for citizens in order to enhance visibility and social interactions, as well as to promote society more healthy and economically more reliable. Today, urban interventions cause that places value and attention to the places have reduced and, therefore, sense of non-place replace it. Therefore, constructive and optimal solutions should be presented in order to improve the life quality in urban neighborhoods. The purpose of this research is urban design according to the principles of place making in Baharestan neighborhood. Considering the available potential in this neighborhood, it is possible that with using the principles and criteria of place making, a suitable design and coincident with social and cultural structure of the neighborhood present. The work process includes examining the available theoretical foundations, extracting the principles of place making, reviewing the case study with studying the National documents, observing, photographing and the questionnaire, and finally presenting plans and strategies in order to place making in the Baharestan neighborhood. The results of this research show that creating space for social aggregation and social interactions increases the life quality in urban neighborhoods. Also vitality, the presence of different social classes, proper vegetation and water, easy access to pedestrians and riders, retail activities, attention to the mental image and the needs of citizens in design are factors that will create successful urban areas.
