Aim: Thin-outside-fat-inside (TOFI) is used to describe lean individuals with a disproportionate amount of fat (adipose tissue) stored within their abdomen. Increased levels of many of the risk factors associated with the metabolic syndrome can be obviously seen in TOFI person’s whose body mass index (BMI) is less than 25 kg/m2 . There are some evidences suggesting that the BMI is not appropriate index due to ignoring the nature of weight. A scanning technique pioneered by British doctors has discovered that many outwardly slim people are storing up dangerous levels of fat in their bodies. This phenotype is a further refinement of the “metabolically-obese but normal-weight. Method: We studied a total of 45 depressed inactive sedentary women (age 35 ± 6 years). Based on a cardiometabolic risk score, nonobese (body mass index [BMI] ≤ 27) and obese women (BMI 27) were selected. Total and regional body composition were assessed with body composition analyzer and WC (waist circumferences). Cardiometabolic parameters (LDL. Cholesterol, Triglyceride, and HDL) and plasma insulin were measured.
Results: Indices of total adiposity, peripheral fat distribution and lean body mass were not significantly different between healthy and unhealthy phenotypes. Although obese women had more fat mass, their cardio metabolic parameters were to some extent the same as healthy nonobese and they were better in glucose and lipid levels.
Conclousion: Combining individual body components with their related functional aspects (e.g. the endocrine, metabolic and inflammatory profiles) will provide a suitable basis for future definitions of a metabolically healthy body composition.
