It has been recently proved by Tong-Viet [{\it J. Algebra} {\bf 357} (2012) pp. 61-68] that non-abelian simple groups are uniquely determined by the structure of their complex group algebras. In this paper, we survey the recent improvements of Tong-Viet s result, including our recent work on extending this result to some almost simple groups of Lie type. In particular, we show that some almost simple unitary groups are uniquely determined by the structure of their complex group algebras.
