For detection of vegetation changes, usually temporal images are independently analyzed or vegetation index differencing is implemented. In this study, a vegetation change index, named normalized difference vegetation change index (NDVCI), was applied to directly detect vegetation changes between two different time images. The effectiveness of this method for vegetation change detection was evaluated at seven test sites in different environmental conditions in Iran, Malaysia, and Italy. Overall accuracy, kappa coefficient, and omission and commission errors were calculated to assess accuracies of the resulting change maps. The results demonstrated great performance of NDVCI for monitoring vegetation changes at different environmental conditions. Accordingly, the technique may prove useful for change detection in future vegetation studies.
