Atmospheric distillation unit of Shiraz Refinery has been simulated in steady state and converted
to dynamic state and results are verified. To study and control a refinery unit in order to investigate
in heat integration, optimization, etc., simulation is unavoidable. Steady state simulation is not
useful due to ideal conditions and not inclusion of transient responses. So the unit needs to be
simulated in dynamic conditions inevitably. In dynamic simulation, parameters variations and
applied disturbances are controllable and getting data are closer to the actual data. So the effects of
particular conditions on amount and quality of products can investigate with little cost and no need
of physical available structure variation and primary design. As some assumptions in steady state
simulation, e.g. the assumed but not real pressure profile in the column, the simulated results in
steady state are different from dynamic simulation. Because of calculating all the profiles in the
column based on the geomery, the results from dynamic simulation are more reliable and closer to
real data. The simulation of our case study confirms these facts.
