A numerical study on segregation behavior of binary mixtures in gas-solid fluidized beds was
carried out in this work. The gas phase was modeled using the continuum theory and the solid
phase was modelled by the discrete element method. Results of the model were validated by the
experimental data on the extent of segregation published in literature. Simulation results are in
good agreement with experimental data at different solid mixtures, initial bed heights and
superficial gas velocities. Results showed that rearrangement and consequently segregation of
particles potentially occur in loose regions of the bed. Increasing the gas velocity and mass
fraction of small particles enhance the mixing of particles while decreasing the bed height
promotes the segregation of particles in the bed
