In this study, polymeric latexes with bimodal distribution in particle size were prepared by
emulsion copolymerization. The effect of monomer and surfactant amounts in the secondary feed
on primary and secondary particle sizes were investigated. The results showed that by control of
monomer and surfactant amounts in the second step of polymerization and after formation of
primary particles, it is possible to prepare bimodal latex particles with desired primary and
secondary particle sizes and their ratio as well. Primary particles were designed with core-shell
structure for application in water base traffic coating and secondary particles had low Tg
composition and molecular weight for decreasing minimum film formation temperature (MFFT) to
formation of continuous film.
