Iran s presidential candidates’ debates: A metadiscourse analysis within Hyland framework

This study tried to investigate metadiscourse markers in Iran s six presidential candidates’ debates in 2017. In order to collect data the researchers used script form of three debates. The data were analyzed based on Hyland framework (2005). Then, the study used chi-square formula to examine the frequency of three debates and to study whether there is any significant difference in the use of metadiscourse markers in three debates. Results of the present study revealed six candidates used two types of metadiscourse markers like interactive and interactional. They used interactive markers lower than interactional markers. Therefore, findings showed that there was not statistically significant difference on the frequency of interactive and interactional metadiscourse markers.
