The S-wave velocity model, to the depth of 160 km for the NW of Iran is obtained using non-linear inversion of Rayleigh wave tomographic datain the period range from 7 to 60 s. The three-dimensional shear velocity model of the region is createdby36 juxtaposed one-dimensional cellular structures, sized 1oby 1o. OurVs. modelsshow that hethickness of the crust and lithospherevaries between 40-57 km and 60-120 km, respectively. The shallowest lithosphere is observed in Eastern Turkey, probably due to some magmatic activities. In most part of the cells the contrast of velocity above and below Moho discontinuity is high. Based on the average value of Moho and lithosphere depth, we concluded that the approximately high topography of the region is supported by a warm and upwelling mantle, rather than by a thick crust.
