پس از آنكه مديران صنايع به اين نتيجه رسيدند كه جهت ارائه سريع ، ارزان و باكيفيت محصولات و خدمات خود به مشتريان و بازارهاي جهاني نياز مبرم به يك مديريت زنجيره تامين كارا دارند ، اندازه گيري عملكرد كل زنجيره تامين و هر يك از اعضاي آن بصورت مجزا به جهت بهبود آن ضرورت يافت.پيشرفت دنياي جديد ، سازمان ها و شركت ها را مجبور كرده تا در جهت بهبود عملكرد زنجيره تامين خود گام برداشته ، در راستاي اهداف زنجيره حركت نمايند . ارزيابي عملكرد فعاليتي است كه آنها را در راه رسيدن به اهداف استراتژيك زنجيره ياري مي دهد . به منظور اجراي يك سيستم ارزيابي عملكرد ، تدوين و تعريف شاخص هاي مناسب در سطوح مختلف زنجيره ضروري مي باشد .همچنين در سالهاي اخير مسئله توانايي و چگونگي برخورد موفقيت آميز سازمانها با تغييرات محيطي، به يك موضوع مهم و متداول در جوامع آكادميك و صنعتي تحت عنوان «چابكي» تبديل گرديده است؛ بطوريكه از سازمانهاي چابك به عنوان سازمانهاي قرن 21 ياد مي شود. با كشيده شدن رقابت از سطح سازمانها به سطح زنجيره تامين آنها در سالهاي اخير، اصطلاح «چابكي زنجيره تامين» نيز به عنوان يك الزام وارد ادبيات زنجيره تامين گرديده است. اين مقاله بر آن است تا با معرفي مفهوم چابكي زنجيره تامين به عنوان يك راهكار و راهبرد جهت افزايش عمكرد زنجيره تامين و پاسخگويي هرچه بهتر به نيازهاي مشتريان و افزايش رضايت آنان و همينطور شناسايي ابعاد و عوامل تشكيل دهنده آن و ارائه مدلي مفهومي جهت سنجش آن، بر لزوم شناخت هرچه بيشتر اين مفهوم و جايگاهي كه مي تواند در افزايش عملكرد زنجيره تامين شركتها و در نتيجه توسعه صنعت كشور داشته باشد، تاكيد كند.
