Metallic pressure vessels are widely used in various industries. In order to reduce weight and increase the burst pressure, metallic vessels are reinforced by filament-wound composites. Estimation of the burst pressure before doing experimental tests is of great interest for engineers. In this study, it is focused on the progressive failure analysis of the aluminum cylindrical part of a pressure vessel reinforced by carbon/epoxy composites. First, a cylindrical tube is modeled in commercial finite element software, ABAQUS. The behavior of aluminum liner is defined elastic-perfect plastic and a progressive damage model is used for filament-wound composite based on the Hashin failure criterion. Due to some problems in convergence of ABAQUS/Standard solution, Dynamic/Explicit solution is selected and results including burst pressure and modes of failure are compared with available experimental results. Results show that Dynamic/Explicit solution is an effective and reliable method for studying damage in composites.
