Despite ample resources on how to read journalistic texts(e.g. Sharma,2006;Manoff Schudson, 1987; Reah, 1998; Shams, 2012; Bakhshandeh,2014),and despite a large number of descriptive researches on analyzing characteristic features of such a genre (e.g. Talebinejad Mohammad Shahi, 2016; Bakhshandeh Mosallanejad,2005; Gholami, 2009; Hatim Mason, 1990; Ventola,1995), the number of pedagogical resources on translating journalistic texts is rather scanty, in both English and Persian(e.g. Tajvidi, 2001, 2005; Mollaei, 2010). What this workshop intends to highlight and put into practice is to introduce a discourse-based approach to translating journalistic texts into Persian, and in particular a neglected area which seems to have not been touched upon in translation studies yet : translation of what we refer to as covert cohesive devices . To clarify the point, it is not uncommon in English journalistic texts to leave cohesive devices covert, whereas translating the text as such without considering Persian discoursal rhetorical thematic development patterns would result in confusion of the readers. At other times, the interpolatory comments of the English news writer are translated into Persian without explicitly signaling them as necessitated by the Persian rhetorical patterns. This too is another source of gross mistranslations and ensued miscommunication. Drawing upon Halliday Hasan s (1976) model and presenting a number of relevant samples, the workshop aims to warn both potential and practicing translators of journalistic texts to avoid such pitfalls.
