Metadiscourse Markers: Exploring Their Impact on Interpretation and Quality of Translation

This quasi-experimental study aimed at examining the use of Interactive and Interactional metadiscursive features, as proposed by Hyland s model (2005), in the translation of political passages related to the events of September 11th, 2001 by trained and untrained translators. Convenience sampling method was adopted and 30 translators were selected from among MA students of translation at Allameh Tabatabie University, Tehran, Iran. Then they were rabdomly divided into two group. This way, a group of 15 translators enrolled in a workshop (experimental group) was provided education through Hyland s model and control group of 15 translators were taught in way devoid of this model. To analyze the data, chi-square as well as independent T-test were used. Results showed that the trained translators interpreted the texts better than the untrained translators, namely translations of a better quality. In fact, the use of this Hyland s model through exploiting on the metadiscourse features could portrayea more comprehensive picture of the internal structure of the passages for the translators.
