For MBR process, PVC is an outstanding candidate due to its characteristics such as good mechanical strength, thermal properties and low cost. However, the inherent hydrophobicity of the PVC membrane causes fouling during wastewater treatment. Many studies have been reported to produce the hydrophilic PVC membranes. In this work PVC membrane is modified by graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. The presence of hydrophilic groups on the GO makes this an attractive option for producing hydrophilic membranes. Different amount of GO (0.1, 0.15 and 0.2 wt%) was added to the PVC/GO membrane, the pure water flux of GO/PVC membrane increased from 70 L/(m2 h) in neat PVC to 140 L/(m2 h) with 0.1wt.% of GO. The addition of GO in PVC exhibited a significant enhancement in hydrophilicity and water flux. As the amount of GO increased, a decline in water drop contact angle was observed. The contact angle was decreased from 85o in neat PVC to 70o in PVC/GO. Also the permeability and mechanical strength of PVC membrane was improved with the addition of GO.
