The study of some effective factors on voice onset time of oral plosives in Ilami Kurdish

Voice Onset Time is one of the most important phonetic cues of voicing. The goal of this study is to examine the effect of pertinent issues like place of articulation, vowel context and gender of speakers. To do this 60 Ilami s Kurdish words were chosen and read by 5 male and 5 female speakers at the initial and intervocalic position of words. The results revealed that the different places of articulation influenced the VOT values. The longer values of VOT are produced in velar place of articulation. Vowel context also affected VOT but just high vowel caused the voiceless plosives to have longer VOTs. Measuring sex differences showed that female speakers produce longer VOTs for voiceless plosives in both positions
