In this text, the researcher presents a background of different native speaker communities in general and the concept of accent in particular. First, the researcher elaborates on the issue of native speaker versus nonnative speaker and an explanation of accent and accent-familiarity is presented. Then, foreign accented speech with regard to its recognition based on three main factors will be described. Factors affecting foreign language acquisition comes next in which the researcher highlights four sections including critical age versus accent acquisition, age of onset versus foreign accent, exposure to a foreign language, and motivation. After that, a number of recent studies relevant to the topic of research will be delineated. At the end, the gap in the literature is elaborated on.
