Iran has/had several salty lakes containing Dunaliella. There are limited researches on the physiological behaviour of Iranian Dunaliella in different environments including salt concentration. Dunaliella is physiologically very flexible and can quickly adapt to new environmental conditions. Dunaliella salina basically belongs to the brine aquatic ecosystems, but different salt concentrations have different effects on its physiology. METHODS The experiment was done with three salinity levels (2, 3 and 4 M NaCl) and two Iranian isolates (SH1 and M1). The isolates SH1 and M1 were selected from Urmia and Maharloo Lake, respectively. D. salina growth (cell number), photosynthetic pigments concentration, glycerol, protein, starch and lipid content were analysed after 2 weeks. The high protein content, carbohydrate digestibility, pigments, ω3 and ω6 family lipids and glycerol make microalgae an unconventional source for improving the food nutritional state and hence the health of humans and animals. The results showed that microalgae physiological behaviour affected not only by environmental factors but also by genetic characteristics and the metabolic potential of microalgae. SH1 (Urmia) isolate in 4M accumulated the highest amount of chlorophyll, carotenoids, glycerol and protein, while the lowest growth (cell number) and starch content was also attributed to SH1 isolates under 4M salinity. The maximum amount of lipid content was accumulated in M1 (Maharloo) isolate in lower salinity. DISCUSSION The results are showing that isolate with Urmia lake origin have good potential for high growth and production of various metabolites except lipid and it is the proper candidate for high biomass production under high salinity. Describing the ecophysiological differences of isolates in Iran can be used in biotechnological applications. In this way, simple and inexpensive methods such as changing the salinity of the environment can be achieved with such goals as increasing growth for feeding aquatic animals, synthesis and extracting valuable and effective products. In this regard, the selection of suitable isolates, will be practical and affordable.
