Functionally graded materials products, due to their complicated manufacturing process including fabrication and tempering process, needs to be evaluated to be truly produced. Ultrasonic inspection techniques, as one of the most accurate and reliable nondestructive evaluation method, might provide sensitive indices to characterize FG plates. In this research, the wave arrival time in an ultrasonic test is used to characterize the ceramic distribution in the FG plate. An approximation method, called HLA, is employed for wave propagation investigation through FGM plate. Numerical formulation of the wave velocity and arrival time are offered using HLA, followed by accreditation by ABAQUS FE package. For aluminum and alumina as components of FG plate, the wave propagation for cases of aluminum, alumina and FG plate including different powers fraction distributions, have been analyzed. Results show that the velocity based features can give a reasonable approximation of the value of power fraction indices and can be used as a tool for FGM product evaluation.
