This study examined the antioxidant and anticancer activities of silver nanoparticle coated with bovine serum albumin (AgNPs@BSA). Over the past few decades, there has been considerable interest in developing albumin nanoparticles as drug delivery devices. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) is an important endogenous antioxidants due to its potential of acting as Reactive oxygen species (ROS) Scavenger. On the other hand, toxicity of silver nanoparticles had been demonstrated on human cell lines. In the present study, silver nanoparticle were coated with bovine serum albumin (BSA) by a desolvation technique. The surface properties of the AgNPs@BSA were characterized by UV-Vis spectroscopy and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). Human breast cancer cells (MCF1 cells) were then cultured in the presence of the nanoparticles to evaluate the cytotoxicity of AgNPs@BSA by the MTT colorimetric technique. The antioxidant activities of AgNPs@BSA were evaluated in terms of their inhibition of autoxidation rate of pyrogallol as superoxide. The AgNPs@BSA formation was confirmed by DLS which showed nanoparticle size distribution from 775 nm to 789 nm and mean diameter of 740 nm. The effect of AgNPs@BSA on MCF1 exhibit a dose-dependent toxicity for the cell tested and the viability of MCF-7 decreased to 115 (LD11) at the concentration of 1 μg/ml. The IC50 value of antioxidant activities of AgNPs@BSA were 8 μg/ml which showed that AgNPs@BSA were good superoxide scavengers. In conclusion, our data show that AgNPs@BSA had antioxidant and anticancer activities in MCF-1 cells.
