The effect of zinc addition (0, 2, 4, and 6 wt%) on the microstructure and phase formation in the Mg-0.5Ca-0.5RE magnesium alloy was studied. The Mg12Re intermetallic compound was observed in all alloys while the grain boundary Mg7Zn3-Ca-RE phase was formed at the grain boundaries of Zn-containing alloys. Moreover, the extrusion process let to the intense grain refinement and fracturing and dispersion of the grain-boundary phase, which revealed the significance of hot working for the enhancement of microstructure of Mg alloys.
