Sandwich panels made by fibre metal laminates (FML) face sheets and foam cores are investigated in tensile loading. To change the behaviour of sandwich panels in tensile loads, shape memory alloy (SMA) wires were embedded in the FML face sheets. The effect of various SMA numbers and different pre-strains on the SMA wires in the structure are investigated. Five types of sandwich panels included panels without SMA wire, two SMA wires with 0% pre-strain, two SMA wires with 5% pre-strain, four SMA wires with 0% pre-strain and four SMA wires with 5% pre-strain were studied. The specimens are subjected to tensile test according to ASTM standard. The optimum state of the structure for gaining higher energy absorption and strength during the tensile test is determined that shows the number of SMA wires with higher pre-strains have better effect in the results. By including 4 SMA wires and 5% pre-strained SMA wires, the strength is increased by 47% as compared to the specimens without SMA wires.
