Solidification/stabilization is a process in which the waste is converted into an insoluble rock-like material by mixing with suitable species to form a solid product. The most common materials used are cementing agents such as cement, lime, clay and gypsum mixtures. In the present study, solidification of sludge originating from a tannery plant in Charmshahr industrial region was performed using production of cements blocks and bricks. Sludge was partially replaced in cement and clay bricks with mixing ratios of 30-70% and 20, 40 and 60 wt.% by dry weight, respectively. The samples were further subjected to 28 days water curing. Results from this study indicated that the sludge incorporated bricks (20 wt.%) is appropriate for one storied buildings and cement blocks containing 30-50 wt.% sludge had proper compressive strength for sanitary burial according to EPA regulations. It can also be concluded that tannery sludge could be sustainably stabilized in clay bricks and cement blocks however, additional studies are needed for large-scale applications.
