Optimization of a novel varied pressure HDH desalination system with sub-atmospheric pressure humidification is investigated using design of experiment (DoE). The influences of the inlet air and water temperatures into the humidifier, the feed saline water flow rate, the mass flow rate ratio of water-to-air on desalinated water production rate and gained output ratio (GOR) are studied. The results indicate that decreasing the pressure in the humidifier, increasing the inlet water and air temperatures into the humidifier cause to increase of the produced distilled water and GOR. However, among the effective parameters, the humidifier pressure exhibits a great effect on the humidifier performance, while a slight increase in the production of desalinated water is observed by increasing the air temperature. The optimum water-to-air mass flow rate ratio is determined. In best operating condition, the maximum distilled water production rate and gained output ratio (GOR) attain to 1.05 L/h.m2 and 3.36, respectively.
