ALI B. ABI TALEB (600-661 AD), cousin and son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad, first Shi ite Imam, father of the Imam Hassan and Imam Hossain by Fatimah, and fourth caliph (35-40/656-61).The virtues of Imam Ali (A.S) had reached a high standard of greatness, majesty, to extent that it is unexpected to account and explain it. Imam’s life has three distinct phases: from his birth until the death of the Holey Prophet (P.B.U.H.); until the murder of Osman; and from his election to the caliphate to his death. Islam is dedicated towards the human being and ensuring a productive life in this world and the Hereafter. Since Islam was at the center of Imam Ali’s (A.S) leadership, the human being becomes a main points. Imam (A.S) did not segregate between the social classes. He was often seen roaming the streets of Kufa like ordinary people. He did not need the army or any guard to protect him. In fact, many times, the people who interacted with him did not even recognize him. The Imam Ali (A.S) used to help them. The Imam (A.S) used to protect them. One recalls the time where he brought food for a widow and her children and how he played with orphans. Imam Ali (A.S) was part of his people and the people of all epochs. He writes to Malik Al-Ashtar in his famous letter (number 53) to advise him about his behavior toward the people as a governor of Islamic state. He says that people are two groups; either your religious brother or your partner in human being. Thus, in defending the oppressed and doing justice, Islam is not a distinguishing factor for Imam Ali (A.S): Muslims and non-Muslims equally benefit from this right. In this article, I will have a study on the virtues and socio-political thoughts and activities of the first Shi ite Imam.
