Despite superior properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), mechanical properties of the CNT/epoxy
composites have not been improved significantly. This is because of poor and unstable fine dispersion of CNTs, which
leads to the weak interaction between nanotubes and matrix. In this work, functionalized single wall carbon nanotubes
in different conditions (Ar, O2 and argon/ethylene diamine (ED) induced plasma and also chemically acid- treated) were
prepared firstly and their (SWNTs)/ bisphenol-F based epoxy resin nanocomposites were made. Then mechanical and
electrical properties of the resulting nanocomposites were investigated. The effects of plasma modification and acid
treatment of CNTs on the tensile strength, tensile modulus, impact resistance and electrical resistance of the composites
were studied. The results indicated improved mechanical and electrical properties because of the effective modification
in their interfacial interactions. Modified CNTs from acid treated and ED induced plasma in some cases show superior
properties, which arise from remarkable interaction and reaction between functional groups on CNTs and epoxy groups
of the epoxy resin. This leads to good and stable dispersion of nanotubes in the matrix and it has been schemed in Fig. 1
typically.
