Feasibility study of preparing skin care formulation with mycosporine-like amino acids extracted from Spirulina platensis

Mycosporin-like amino acids (MAAs) are UV-absorbing compounds produced by various organisms such as algae and cyanobacteria to protect themselves from harmful UV radiation. Thus, they can potentially be used as sunscreens in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. In this research, the feasibility of preparing sunscreen formulations was investigated with emphasis on the types of extracts of MAAs extracted from Spirulina platensis microalgae. For this purpose, the compounds of phycobili proteins such as phycocyanin, allophycocyanin and phycoerythrin were extracted from microalgae and their amounts were calculated and compared.
