Abstract: An antibacterial polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite hydrogel with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) microcapsules was developed for drug delivery and wound dressing application. Tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) as an antibiotic drug is encapsulated in CMCS microcapsules (MCs). The MCs were prepared by the emulsion crosslinking method and incorporated into PVA hydrogels to produce wound dressing. MCs and PVA hydrogels were characterized by SEM and XRD. The SEM images showed average particle size of 4.7 micron for microcapsules. Antibacterial activities of hydrogels against E. coli and S.aureus demonstrated the powerful antibacterial effect of PVA/MCs wound dressing.
