The first order shear deformation theory is developed to study some important aspects on thermal
buckling of functionally graded circular cylindrical shells on elastic foundation. To model the
elastic foundation, the Winkler and Pasternak foundations are used. This type of foundation reacts
in compression as well as in tension. The functionally graded shell varies countinuously in the
thickness direction and is assumed to be under two types of thermal loading as unifrom
temperature rise and linear temperature rise. The stability equations are established via the energy
method. The resulting buckling equation is optimized for half-wave numbers to obtain the critical
temperatures for each thermal loading. The effects of elastic coefficients and functionally graded
index on critical temperatures are discussed carefully. The results show that the Pasternak
foundation coefficient has played a significant role in increasing the critical temperatures in
functionally graded shells.
