Colour education in art and design

Colour is an important medium and tool for designers and artisans to illustrate their artwork much more efficiently, and thus, colour education or colour teaching is one of the major duty, which art and design schools are responsible to do. However, it seems that there would be a lack of effective colour knowledge for the students in art university and colleges. In the present research, a survey was done to explore the level of colour knowledge and information among university students in art and design schools. Seventy eight university students were asked to answer a questionnaire, consisting of about fifteen essential issues in colour and colour fundamentals. Just about 12.8% of them answered only two of the questions and the rest of them had no enough information about the issues. On the basis of the results, it can be concluded that there is an educational problem in teaching colour in the university schools. Currently, the students in art and design universities even know a few about colour fundamentals, which were solved 112 years ago in ”colour problems” book . Further investigation is required to find the exact level of colour knowledge of students.
