In this article thin-walled conical tube has been studied as a kind of mechanical energy absorber. By
making groove on the structure’s wall, the effects of peripheral groove on the process of crushing and
absorption ability have been investigated.
Distance and geometry of the grooves are the main variables through this study, which include
rectangular and triangular geometry. This means that by considering numbers of different grooves from
both mentioned type, crushing has been studied under quasi-static axial loading condition. Eventually
the results of rectangular and triangular grooved cone with non-grooved have been compared.
The investigation includes models of computer simulations for all states and comparing basic answers
with existence computer models and also the analytical modelling.
In fact the purpose of this study is investigating the absorption ability and more controlling the process
of crushing in conical energy absorbers which tried to optimize by executing peripheral grooves on the
cone’s wall.
The initial peak load and mean axial crushing load are the main factors of the study, which showed by
increasing tension concentration in different geometries of the grooves, the initial peak load and the
amount of absorbed energy will decrease.
