مرد ، خشونت و بحران هويت مردانه در داستان باغ وحش ادوارد آلبي

منتقدان بسیاري داستان باغ وحش را نمایشنامه اي درباره بحران هویت و انزواي انسان مدرن می دانند، اما كمتر به جایگاه كلیدي هویت مردانه در این اثر توجه شده است. دیدگاه سنتی در مورد مردان و ارزش هاي مردانه، نقش حاشیه اي مردان در فرهنگ مصرف گرایی كه در عین حال سخت تحت تاثیر تبلیغات است، و تناقضی كه در نهاد این نقش ها نهفته است مرد دنیاي امروز را از جایگاه امن و مقتدر پیشین او در صدر جامعه دور كرده است. این مساله مرد مدرن را با نوع جدیدي از بحران هویت مواجه كرده است كه داستان باغ وحش با ظرافت و دقت آن را به تصویر می كشد. نارضایتی ناخودآگاه پیتر از وضعیت موجود در واقع از علائم همین بحران است و رویارویی او با جري، كه تجسم جنبه پنهان شخصیت خود اوست، تلاشی است براي بازیابی هویت گم شده مردانه از طریق خشونت. قتل/خودكشی پایان نمایشنامه در آن واحد هم حركتی ناامیدانه است و هم امیدوارانه،حركتی براي رسیدن به یك بیداري جدید كه میتواند فاجعه بار یا فوق العاده باشد.

Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story has often been read as a play reflecting the modern man’s alienation and identity crisis, but it has rarely been regarded as reflecting the modern man’s identity crisis. A closer look, however, proves the crisis of masculinity to be at the heart of the play. The traditionally defined patriarchal view of men and masculine values, the marginalized and yet widely advertized role of men in the consumer society, and the subtly paradoxical nature of these roles alienates the modern man from his previously safe and unshakable place at the top of the social order. Unwilling to let go of any of these ideologically defined images, the modern man is faced with a unique kind of identity crisis, which is carefully depicted in The Zoo Story. Peter’s unconscious dissatisfaction is a symptom of this condition, and the confrontation with his alter ego is an equivocal endeavor to restore the lost masculine identity through violence. The final suicide/murder is at the same time desperate and hopeful, promising an awakening which might be disastrous or marvelous.
