According to the UN reports, among natural disasters, floods and storms have caused the most
damages to human society. In Iran, due to the destruction of environmental and natural
resources, there has been an increase in flood disasters. In this research, in order to study flood
characteristics of Gorgan Rud river in Gonbad hydrometric station. 40 years (1337-1377) daily
discharge data was analyzed. At first, homogeneity of data was tested by Smirnov-kolmogrov technique using technical hydrology soft ware. The daily discharge of hydrograph was drawn
for the entire period and then all the floods during the period were studied. Then, the floods
characteristics including time of occurrence (month, season and year), initial discharge, peak
discharge, volume, time to peak and… were extracted from hydrograph. The study showed that
there was an increase in the frequency of floods’ occurrence during 1338-1377. Flood occurred
in spring and summer has the longest and the shortest base time, respectively.
