Among the most important systems in which the methods of fault detection are frequently applied are petrochemical systems.
In this paper we would apply two major methods of fault detection for detecting some probable faults in a nonlinear chemical system called double cstr (continuous stirred tank reactor with two tanks) which has been linearized around the operating points. These two methods are parameter estimation and parity equations. The first method is used for detecting multiplicative faults (faults in the state matrices entries) while the second is used for detecting both additive (such as sensor faults) and
multiplicative faults. In this paper we would detect a common fault by both and then have a comparison of the ability of each method in detecting this fault The conclusion based on simulation results is the last part of the paper. Considering the
precision and speed of linear methods in comparison with nonlinear methods for detecting faults, the results will be excellent and the range of operating points we can linearize the system around is completely acceptable.
