Abstract
Zinc dust primers have persisted since decades for heavy corrosion protection of steel (for
example steel water building, ship building). Since many years an increasing interest of
ecological and economic reasons at environment-friendly waterborne systems. This brings,
however, some problems in the field of the metal pigments. The reaction of the pigments with
water results in a consumption of pigment during production, storage or application. This
consumption can reduce the protection effect of the pigments or cause even a foaming of the
material which makes impossible a further application and utilization. Aim of the
investigations, the lecture underlying, was to show implementation approaches for the
stabilization of metal pigments in waterborne corrosion protection primers. After a catalogue
of requirements was defined, three variants allowing stabilization could be found. So systems
could be manufactured by suitable pigment surface treatment or specific recipe formulation
of the water thinnable metal pigment containing primer system.
