در طول تاريخ بسياري از اديبان در مورد پرسش‌هاي اساسي بشر، به‌ويژه مسيله مرگ و زندگي مطالبي نگاشته‌اند. در ميان آنان مي‌توان از شاعر صوفي و عارف پارسي، مولانا جلال‌الدّين محمد بلخي و نيز نويسنده و متفكر نامدار روسي، لف نيكالايويچ تالستوي نام برد. مولانا معتقد بود كه اين جهان گذرگاهي است به‌سوي جهان ابديت. به عقيده وي انساني كه به دنبال خلق نيكي‌هاست و به‌درستي زندگي مي‌كند، از مرگ نمي‌هراسد. تمام آنچه را كه او در اين اثر خود بيان مي‌كند، مي‌توان در اين جمله خلاصه كرد: «تا نميري، نرهي». تالستوي نيز مرگ را سرآغازي براي حياتي تازه مي‌پنداشت و معتقد بود كه بايد ساده و زيبا زيست و به انسان‌ها عشق ورزيد، در آن صورت ترس ما از مرگ كاهش مي‌يابد.

Many scholars throughout history have written about humanity’s essential questions, especially life and death. Among them, the Persian Sufi poet and mystic Mevlana Jalal ad-Din Mohammad Balkhi, and the famous Russian writer and thinker Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy can be mentioned. Rumi believed that this universe is a path towards the eternal world. According to him, a man who has good intentions and lives a good life, does not fear death. All he wants to say in his work can be summarized in the following sentence: “Thou shalt not be delivered until the death!” Also, L.N. Tolstoy thought, that death is the beginning of a new life, and believed that we should live a beautiful simple life and love humans. Thus, our fear of death would be abated.
