A research on almond growing in Turkey and the state of selection studies

Abstract
In Turkey, almond is one of the most investigated fruit species in selection studies in Turkey. Therichness of our country on genetic variation of almond provides facility for achievement in breedingstudies in a short period of time. Because almond is cultivated on many regions of Turkey, it isextremely important to develop varieties proper for a certain areas. Therefore, some of severalsuperior types obtained during the selection studies performed in different areas of our countryto date have been registered as cultivar. The some almond varieties located in the registered list ofFood, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry are Dokuzoğuz-I (104-1), Dokuzoğuz-II (120-1), GülcanI (101-23), Gülcan II (300-1), 48-2, 48-3, 48-4, 48-5, 101-9, 101-13 and 106-1 (1). This study aimedto the status of almond cultivation in Turkey and the demonstration of almond types selected fromdifferent regions of our country.
