AN INVESTIGATION OF PRIMARY MATHEMATICS PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ VIEWS TOWARDS MATHEMATICAL LITERACY
Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to examine primary mathematics pre-service teachers’ views towards definition, importance and development of mathematical literacy (ML). Case study method was used in this study. The study was carried out with 44 primary mathematics pre-service teachers. In order todetermine preservice teachers’ views towards ML, interview form which is consisted seven open- ended questions were used. The obtained data were analyzed by content analysis. Analysis of data was carried out with coding, creation of categories and themes. As a result of obtained data analysis, it is determined that pre-service teachers had traditional and current literacy approach in their views. Pre-service teachers reported the importance of ML because of its individual, social and cognitive benefits. According to preservice teachers, factors as mathematics concretization, interest, interaction, guidance to thinking are effective in the development of ML.
