IDENTIFICATION OF PRE-SCHOOL PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ PROFICIENCY LEVELS OF DRAMA EDUCATION
Abstract :
This research was carried out to identify pre-school pre-service teachers’ proficiency levels of drama education and their opinions about “drama in education” in 2012-2013. The data was collected from 60 sophomore pre-service teachers studyıng at Ziya Gökalp Education Faculty at Dicle University. The study mainly focuses on the key role of drama in educating pre-school children. It investigates how necessary these teachers find drama education and to what extent they are competent in it. This qualitative research study employed a Drama Proficiency Survey that includes the demographic information and their opinions about the application of the drama courses, their proficiency levels and the extent to which they find it necessary. It was found that the drama courses were given under unfavorable conditions such as physical inadequacy and lack of equipment. The study concludes that the lectures teaching drama courses are partially proficient, that drama lesson should continue to exist in the program, and that the credits and duration of the drama courses should be sustained. In addition, the course at the pre-school department should be given by the lecturers who were trained in theatre departments or in pre-school education departments.
