MAIN ASPECTS OF SURVEILLANCE IN CONSUMER SOCIETY: A PANORAMA
Abstract :
Surveillance processes and practices continue to be a decisive component of contemporary society with new functionalities gained through the process of modernity and new aspects acquired in line with the comprehensive gainings of the conditions of late modernity. It is seen that surveillance reaching new heights in terms of scale and coverage based on information technology becomes operational, among other areas, through consumption process and practices which constitute a defining aspect of contemporary society. Characteristics of the surveillance processes determined and rendered operational by the specific context of the consumer society is the subject of this article. Firstly it will be elaborated on the new tools of surveillance, then surveillance processes and practices rendered operational through consumption will be dealt with and their potential of maintaining and reproducing the current social inequalities will be pointed.
