COMPARISON OF MÎZÂNÜ’L-EDEB WITH İLM-İ BELÂGAT

Belâgat is explained as the science of giving speeches clearly in appropriate time and place. Belâgat studies started with the studies of understanding Koran, and than became a unique study in Arabic Literature. In Turkish Literature, althouhg there were many translated belâgat books and commentary books about them, Arabic belâgat books were read. After the time of Tanzimat schools which give western style education were opened. But according to their education these schools’ students don’t know Arabic well. So they need Turkish belâgat books to use in lessons. In this term belâgat books were written for them. The most important of these books are Ahmed Hamdî’s Belâgat-ı Lisân-ı Osmânî , Ahmed Cevdet Paşa’s Belâgat-ı Osmâniyye and Saîd Paşa’s Mîzânü’l- Edeb. İbradılı Mehmed Şükrî’s İlm-i Belâgat is one of them. In this paper we try to compare Saîd Paşa’s Mîzânü’l-Edeb with İbradılı Mehmed Şükrî’s İlm-i Belâgat according to their characteristics and contents.
