Abstract :
In this study, the folklore themes in the Ulak movie, the screenplay of which was written and directed by Cagan Irmak and released in 2008 will be analyzed. Cinema which is an important means of delivering products of folklore to the masses performs this mission greatly in recent years. The important protagonists of the Turkish folk culture such as Hacivat and Karagöz, Deli Dumrul, Keloglan and Koroglu have had a permanent place in the memory of the people, transferred to the motion picture screen. In particular, protagonist in the movie of Ulak,in which fairy tale elements dealt with successfully, Hekim (Physician) Zekeriya takes attention as a kind of representative of tale performer that has an important place in Anatolian culture. Folktale genre which is one of the most important issues of folklore,constitute the basic structure of the film. Tales which are the first literary types encountered by children during their life adventure, is one of the most important means of reflecting their life and inner universe created by them.Some types and characters known for the first time by children by means of tales continue to live longer in their in their memories, leaving permanent traces in their dream world. Tales which are the most important means of moral, individual and psycho-social development and are indispensable with the subtle logic, take children to a mysterious journey in the magical world of seventh art with an emotional style of Hekim Zekeriya (Physician Zekeriya). The messages generally given in the film by means of tales are the actions such as courage, cooperation and socialization which play an important role in human relations are noteworthy. Besides, shamanistic images and rituals and formal discourse and numbers are also the folkloric elements included in the film. A unique visual show is presented to the viewer in some part of the movie by means of actions and dances evoking the Shamanic
