Teacher Views in Primary Schools about Parental Participation in Education
Abstract :
Research aims to identify teacher views on parental participation in educational processes. Study utilizing a survey model used qualitative research methods. Working group was comprised of primary school teachers in Incesu, Province of Kayseri in 2009-2010 educational year (n=150). Interview forms were used as data collection tools and data was analyzed with content analysis technique. Study findings show that while parent participation increases the development and academic achievement of students, level of participation is not at the desired level, affecting teacher performance and motivation negatively and introducing behavioral problems, discipline issues, academic failure, reluctance, loneliness and insecurity in students. Factors that hamper parental participation in educational processes are education, culture, low socio-economic levels, heavy workloads and domestic problems etc. Meetings, conferences and social-educational activities for families and home visits should be organized.
