Examination of Realistic Problem Solving Skills of Sixth Grade Students
Abstract :
The aim of the study which has characteristics of descriptive research is to analyze the routine and real-life problem solving skills of 6th grade students. This study was carried out at aschool in Trabzon with 80 students who were studying at 6th grade. As data collective tool, a test consisting of 10 routine problems and 10 real-life problems developed by Verschaffel, De Corte and Leasure(1994) were used. The findings of the study show that there is a significant difference between the rates of the correct answers that students gave routine problems (%67) and real-life problems (%7). The findings also show that most of the students (%42) solved real-life problems as they solved the routine problems by ignoring real life situation. The other mistakes that were confronted at the solution of the problems are the tendency to use all the numbers that took place in the problem and wrong type of operation choice.
