The Characteristics of Successful School Principals
Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to determine the common characteristics of successful school principals and then to investigate these characteristics in terms of some variables. Participants were seven successful primary school principals from different regions of Turkey. A semi-structured interview consisting of five open-ended questions was used to acquire the opinions of participants related to the characteristics of a successful school principal. Descriptive and content analysis were used to analyze the data. As a result of the analysis, characteristics such as using humor, ensuring the employees’ job satisfaction, effective communication, being idealist and self-devoted, using the powers granted to them properly, ensuring creation of a school culture and providing the best facilities available were found to be effective for school principals to be successful.
