Metaphorical Perspective to Geographical Information System Concepts
Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to define geography teachers and teacher candidates’ perceptions regarding Geographical Information System (GIS), which nowadays became an important tool for area anaylsis and inquiries. Phenomenonology methodology is used because deep analysis of how a phenomenon is perceived is aimed in the study. 20 geography teachers tutoring in different cities and 20 teacher canditates studying in Faculty of Education are participated in the study. Data regarding study group’s opinions and thoughts about the subject is gathered using metaphor technique. Usage of 40 metaphors is identified in the study. It is observed that generally there isn’t a similarity betweeen metaphors being used by geography teachers teacher candidates and they express their perceptions about the subject with different metaphors. It is concluded that metaphors about GIS mostly fall into “an object” or “geographical factor” categories. Based on the results of the study, this paper offers suggestions about correct perception of GIS.
